But before we go to the very details of coffee’s bitter-sweetness blowing up our mind, let’s see the first steps preparing some great preparations for a satisfying coffee, shall we?

  1. Good equipment for the best taste.
  2. It’s true that a good coffee depends on the equipment quality. That’s why you’d prefer to run 2 blocks away just to get the best taste of your morning coffee at the best café in town, because you simply can’t resist the shiny machine and the professional barista’s irresistible charm. Maybe you can get your own Nespresso Creatista Plus, and let’s see the surprising taste melt in your mouth by using this machine, or just open up your café already!

  3. Make sure to get fresh beans.
  4. It’s important to choose coffee beans with roasted dates within the past 2 weeks. You can buy from a local roaster or a better yet, roasting your own is surely the best way to get some fresh beans. Since coffee is very personal, you also need to consider getting coffee beans you like. They’re hugely varied according to variety (Arabica, Robusta, or blend), country of origin, and the roasting type. It’s all worth experiment.

  5. Grind your own for perfection.
  6. Make sure to grind the beans as close as possible to brewing time, it makes the best rate of freshness. The size of the grind is very important to get the best taste. Therefore in order to get the coffee ground at consistent size, it’s better to use a burr grinder. If you found your coffee tastes bitter, it’s either over-extracted or ground too fine. However if you found your coffee tastes flat, it’s either under-extracted or ground too coarse.

  7. Beware of water temperature.
  8. The best recommend water temperature to make a fine coffee is about 90-96C, or about 30 seconds off a full boil. If it’s too cold, you’ll get flat in taste, on the other hand if it’s too hot, you’ll lose the perfect taste.

Once the preparation settled, it’s time to make your own coffee. There are several ways to make a satisfying cup of coffee, but I’ll show you how with coffee maker this time.

  1. Add the water into the reservoir.
  2. It usually needed about 6 ounces (180 ml) of water for each serving. You can simply use a measuring cup or the serving line on your brewer (if it has any). It’s important to learn about your brewer beforehand since there are some brewer needed extra water to cover up the evaporation loss.

  3. Check the filter paper up.
  4. Important to notice that some coffee makers have a mesh filter basket as paper filter and some don’t. So you will need to open the filter compartment up and do the check. Insert a paper filter if your coffee maker doesn’t have any.

  5. Add the ground coffee into the filter.
  6. Commonly you will need 7 to 14 grams of ground coffee, it’s about 1 to 2 tablespoon. As it stated before, you’ll get much define taste using freshly-ground coffee of your own. But you can always choose to use pre-ground coffee instead. Your coffee, your way.

  7. Pour enough water.
  8. It’s time to bring the water just below a boil, or you can just bring the water to a complete boil, take it off the heat then let it cool for about 30 seconds. Pour the water slowly into the filter in a circular motion to saturate the ground coffee and let it ‘bloom’ like it’s inhaling soak up the water, it needs 30 seconds time. If you’re afraid of it getting overflow, pour the water into the filter 1 inch at a time, it’s about 2.5 cm, and let it drain each time.

  9. Take a sip of your secret coffee recipe.
  10. When your mug is filled, remove the dripper, discard the filter along with the ground coffee beans. You can add some sugar or creamer if you like, or just taste the black original one instead. In the end, it’s back to your choice to have perfect coffee just the way you like it.

Just as it stated before, a cup of coffee represents your whole character. Find your own will always be the best way, but you can also choose to believe in the myth told by the charming barista in the back of a shining coffee maker machine.
